SUMMARY:Workshop: Growing & Marketing Wild-Simulated Ginseng - 10-14-23
DESCRIPTION:American Ginseng – Panax quinquefolius\,\n\n\n\nJoin the United Plant Savers ginseng specialist\, Chip Carroll\, on Saturday\, October 14th to learn how to sustainably cultivate\, manage\, and market ginseng roots using the wild-simulated method. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius)\, also commonly known as “sang\,” has been harvested in southeast Ohio for generations\, and the broader Appalachian region\, since the mid-1700’s. A long history of overharvesting\, coupled with a loss of suitable forest habitats\, has resulted in significant declines among wild populations\, and has contributed to increased concern about longevity and conservation of this legendary species. Despite having a reputation as being one of the more difficult herbs to cultivate\, ginseng is an adaptable species that can be successfully grown in wild-simulated forest farming systems. This workshop will provide participants with a detailed look at ginseng’s history\, life cycle\, ecology\, and habitat preferences; an overview of the wild-simulated method; as well as a wild-simulated planting demonstration. Stratified ginseng seed will be available for purchase. \n\n\n\n\nSaturday\, October 14thArrival/Check-In: 9:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.Workshop: 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.Cost: $10 \n\n\n\nLocation: United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary\, Rutland\, OH 45775 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Goldenseal Cultivation Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join the United Plant Savers plant propagation team on Saturday\, September 2nd for a deep dive into goldenseal propagation\, cultivation\, and management.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArrival/Check-In: 8:30 a.m – 9:00 a.m.Workshop: 9 a.m. – 12 pm.Cost: $20 \n\n\n\nLocation: United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary\, Rutland\, OH 45775 \n\n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGoldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis)\, also commonly known as “yellow root\,” is one of southeast Ohio’s most iconic woodland medicinal plants\, and has been harvested from Ohio’s forests for generations. Today\, wild goldenseal populations are less abundant than they were in the past\, and continue to face significant challenges associated with habitat loss\, degradation\, and overharvesting. Fortunately for aspiring growers\, goldenseal is a resilient species that can be successfully cultivated in a variety of forest farming and agroforestry production systems. \n\n\n\nThis workshop will provide participants with a detailed look at goldenseal’s life cycle and habitat requirements; cultivation strategies for forest and agroforestry production systems; and hands-on propagation demonstrations where we will discuss how to subdivide mature rhizomes\, and make cuttings from fibrous roots. Each participant will get two goldenseal rootlets to take home and plant! This workshop will be led by United Plant Savers Forest Program Manager\, Tanner Filyaw.
