Goldenseal Summit 2020 – Full Replay

Goldenseal

A Round Table Discussion on the Future of Goldenseal

Sponsored by The North Carolina Ginseng Association, Living Web Farms, and United Plant Savers

The North Carolina Ginseng Association, United Plant Savers, and Living Web Farms put together an online event to capture the opinions and recommendations of a broad cross-section of experts and producers of Goldenseal. The virtual event took place on April 22, 2020. There were round table discussions that were recorded and edited by Living Web Farms. The areas of discussion included Government/legislation, product manufacturers, existing goldenseal farmers, Universities and agricultural extensions, herb schools, non-profit plant organizations.

The impetus for the Summit is that goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) is in trouble. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has published the status of Goldenseal as “vulnerable”. Its continued presence in our forests has become threatened by both habitat loss and wild harvesting to meet the demand of domestic and international trade. There is an especially high demand in the marketplace for organic goldenseal resulting in wild-harvested roots becoming increasingly hard to find, and those that do exist tend to be smaller than in years past.

Topics addressed in this goldenseal summit include:

  • How to restrict wildcrafting of goldenseal
  • How to provide forest growers with the necessary tools to increase the production of Goldenseal
  • How to get a fair price for farm-grown Goldenseal products
  • Requesting that the US Government and the Bureau of Land Management fund Goldenseal as an agricultural project
  • Providing herbal school students with information on the threat to wild Goldenseal and educating them on alternative herbs
  • Encouraging universities and agricultural extensions to produce more documents for the toolbox for goldenseal growers.
