The International Herb Symposium

The International Herb Symposium (IHS) began more than 25 years ago to bring together herbalists from across the globe. Ever since, it has become a greatly anticipated bi-annual event where we can exchange information about the healing power of plants. Founded by Rosemary Gladstar, it was actually at the 4th annual IHS in 1994 where the seeds were sprouted for the idea that would later become this nonprofit, United Plant Savers (UpS).

The Symposium holds a special place among conferences, bringing people together from so many diverse backgrounds and ways of working with the plants. Since 1992, the gathering has enjoyed the spacious grounds of Wheaton College in Norton, Massachussetts for outdoor medicine plant walks, classes, fire circles and joyous outdoor celebrations. Due to the pandemic, the 15th Annual Symposium made the leap to a virtual format. However, the 16th Annual Symposium in 2023 will be a hybrid event that will make its home at Wheaton College once again. Visit the IHS website for more information.

IHS has long been a fundraiser for UpS, but it wasn’t until the 15th Annual IHS that UpS’s team took the reins and is now the sole organizer and sole beneficiary of IHS proceeds. That means every dollar spent on IHS membership goes back to support UpS.

The 15th Annual IHS was programmed at the height of the pandemic and remains available via our Virtual Learning Center.

The Herbal Emporium

Though emphasis at the Symposium is primarily educational, the Herbal Emporium adds another wonderful dimension to the gathering. It provides a vibrant marketplace for participants to purchase herbal products, wares, and books. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for herbal product businesses, herbalists, artisans, and authors to showcase and sell their offerings. For vendors, IHS offers an incredible chance to network with other herbalists and provides outstanding educational opportunities for herbal enthusiasts from around the world.

Please email if you'd like to be notified of any updates regarding vending at the 16th Annual IHS in 2023.

The International Herb Symposium Film & Photography Festival

Our first ever film fest runs June 25 – September 25, 2022. It kicks off in the years in between Symposiums to provide continued opportunities for connection and learning among plant lovers everywhere. For 2022’s inaugural festival, we received incredible submissions from filmmakers and photographers across the globe—from Brazil, to France, to Turkey, to Canada, and beyond. The final selections feature 40 films (a combination of shorts and feature-length) and seven photographers. These works are intended to ignite a spark in all who see them—encouraging viewers to advocate for the voiceless plants and fungi that need our help.

IHS participants get a free ticket to the film festival. Your discount code will be emailed to you. Tickets for non-IHS participants are $20 and are available here. All ticket proceeds support United Plant Savers. Needs-based scholarships are also available upon request by contacting

The IHS Film & Photography Festival is a collaboration between our nonprofit and Boreal Night Films and is sponsored by Mountain Rose Herbs.
