2023 Accomplishments

Before we move full steam ahead into the next year, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all we achieved together in 2023. Thank you for supporting our organization with your memberships, donations, attendance at events, and comments/shares on social media. We couldn’t have done all this without you!

2023 was a successful year in securing grants for:

Goldenseal – We were awarded a 2-year grant from the USDA to study goldenseal goldenseal propagation. LEARN MORE

Folk Centers – We received a planning grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission to plan for a network of Ohio Folk Centers. LEARN MORE

Forest Farming – We received a planning grant from ARISE to help accelerate forest farming in central Appalachia. LEARN MORE

We published a new chapter on Solomon’s Seal for the “Forest Farmer’s Handbook.” FREE DOWNLOAD

We organized the first in-person International Herb Symposium since the pandemic and created an online library of content from IHS history via the brand new IHS Learning Center. BROWSE CONTENT

We made a digital version of the Ohio Herbal Elders exhibit to make more accessible the oral histories shared by a folks across an array of Appalachian herbal traditions. LISTEN NOW

We consulted on and helped make possible a new short documentary called “Reclaiming.” This incredible film about Appalachian sexual and reproductive traditions is now available for anyone to watch for free on our YouTube channel. WATCH NOW

Not to mention, our regular annual activities, like producing a new edition of the “Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation,” hosting numerous workshops, welcoming new Botanical Sanctuaries to our network, hosting several artists in residence, and more! We can’t wait to see what 2024 brings, and we’re grateful to have you with us for the journey.
