When trekking the rainforest hills of the upper Ecuadorian Amazon, the impressive Cannonball Tree often first captures attention with its enticing scent—a dense, sweet, and musky aroma permeating the surrounding forest. Drawn by this fragrance, you might find cannonball-sized spheres scattered on the forest floor. Looking up, you see many large balls hanging from the tree’s trunk. Voluptuous, thick, bright orange flowers catch your eye, and you marvel at how tall the tree stands, reaching straight up into the canopy, laden with fruits.

Why is the Naked Truth Tree (Couroupita guianensis of the Lecythidaceae family) considered a revival pandit? In this article, I will share the uses of this marvelous Amazonian tree, which has found its way into medical traditions far beyond the Amazon and has now naturalized in many tropical regions worldwide. At Ocean Forest Ecolodge, I planted some 20 years ago, pictured here, and my love and appreciation for this tree have grown firmly by its side.

Glimpses into the Meaning of the Tree’s Native Names

The various Indigenous names for this tree offer insights into its qualities and virtues. Among Kichwa people in the Ecuadorian upper Amazon, the tree is called “Llushtinda muyu,” which translates to “naked truth, exposed, barefaced, or birthday suit” fruit. Its Peruvian name, “Ayauma,” means “soul skull,” considered a master tree that is dieted for obtaining spiritual wisdom and strength. The image of so many “skull” sized fruits on a single trunk, brings to mind, the notion of many minds coming together with a unified purpose. The Siekopai call it “Watí’tsátsá,” meaning “spirit gourd,” while the Waorani refer to the tree as “Pankabukabu,” or “revival tree,” emphasizing its ability to bring things back around, to a healthy, “normal,”condition. In English, it is known as the “Cannonball Tree” due to its cauliflorous cannonball-sized fruits.

Let’s delve deeper into the meanings of these names from which much can be learned. The term “naked truth to barefaced,” inspires the notion, that the name may refer to that the tree is not hiding its virtues. Beyond the exposed abundance of fruits around the tree’s base. Of which the fruit pulp can be given to chickens, mixed with corn, this helps them shed mites and parasites, and the juiced pulp consumed by the teaspoon lower fevers in humans. A prominent feature is that when the tree’s bark is peeled to obtain cordage, unlike any other tree, it swiftly regenerates all of its bark. Even if completely ring-barked, the tree grows back all of its bark. Showcasing the trees remarkable regenerating abilities.

Uses and Benefits of the Names Truth Tree

The Barefaced Fruit Tree is celebrated for its remarkable regenerative properties. Its various parts—flowers, fruits, and leaves—are used in traditional medicine to treat a wide array of ailments. The tree is known for its ability to heal old scars in the lungs, eliminate uterine cysts, arrest cytokine storms, lower fever, combat viruses, vanish fungal infections and much much more.

A personal experience: Once some years back, an Italian friend, a devoted marine turtle conservationist, suffered from persistent hacking due to old tuberculosis scars and a nasty smoking habit. This, coupled with years of walking the humid beaches before sunrise in search for turtles, had him really bad in the lungs. So we peeled a large sack of cannonball tree bark for him, instructing him to boil it for tea and drink it three times a day for nine months. After this period, he reported that his old TB scars were completely gone, much to his medics’ astonishment, and he had quit smoking too!

In the research paper entitled, Couroupita guianensis: A Sacred Plant of India, By Kavana G. B, Dec 2021, published on ResearchGate, relates the following: That Couroupita guianensis, also known as Nagalinga Pushpa and Kailashpati, is a revered plant in India with a multitude of medicinal properties. Couroupita guianensis is a tree of immense significance, both culturally and medicinally, in India. Its wide range of therapeutic applications makes it a valuable resource for traditional and modern medicine.

Allow me to share another experience with this trees remarkably regenerative abilities. Years ago, I had to relocate a Cannonball tree that I had planted just a bit too close to our house. Regardless of the tree still being quite small, about 3 cm in diameter and some 2 meters high, while digging around the roots I was amazed that the taproot was reaching nearly a meter down! Eventually down towards to the tip some, the very tip of the root broke off. The tree was replanted and re-sprouted just fine at its new location. To my utter amazement though, in the sport where I had removed the tree, some months later there was another tree growing! The broken root tip, buried nearly a meter down in the earth, reached its way upwards, pushing through the dark cool earth. Breaking through the surface threshold. Sprouted up towards the sun, growing branches, buds and leafy shoots, and eventually years later into a whole new tree!

The Barefaced Fruit Tree’s remarkable regenerative properties and its role in traditional medicine the world over, underscore its status as a true “Pandit of Revival.” The tree’s resilience and medicinal benefits, its ability to provide a sustainable source of medicine, swiftly growing all its bark back, that can again be harvested again and again, year after year. And it is no coincidence either that all the fruits hanging from the trees trunk, undeniably can be seen as an indicator of what else is needed for today. This being, the phenomena of many minds coming together for the common cause of enacting sustainability, rooted in revival and regeneration, of tapping into the many realities that allow us to live a life of abundance without spoiling the source. For these reasons, my beloved reader, and many more, the Naked Truth Tree is a Revival Pandit.

A Sage of Life’s Rebirth

Oh great naked truth tree, soul skull tree,

cannonball tree, revival tree, pandit of regeneration tree.

A great spiritual friend inside you does live.

Who drinks of thee, is strong to give.

Stripped bare, you grow anew each time,

Roots deep, you touch the earth’s pure rhyme.

What scents do you here expose?

What truths does your bark tea disclose?

You are a sage of life’s rebirth,

Healing scars and proving worth.

Old wounds in lungs, you mend with grace,

virus, fungi and fever you do erase,

uterine cysts, you do dispel.

Cytokine storm now ceased,

patient saved from decease!

Pandit of life, O tree so wise,

Your virtues shine before our eyes.

For humankind, you freely give,

Teaching how to come together and best live.

To heal, to grow, to find our place,

In mother nature’s pure and sweet embrace.

O tree, we learn from your great part,

To nurture life with all our heart.

Cocoterra Rainforest Permaculture Initiative

www.rainforestpermaculture.org

Welcome to Cocoterra, a farmland restoration project and permaculture education center located in the vibrant heart of the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Nestled in the outskirts of the village of Los Planes de Osa, our 72-acre sanctuary is a haven of tropical beauty within the mega-biodiverse rainforest of the Osa Peninsula.

Our property is divided by a stunning 100-foot waterfall and boasts 48 acres of primary primary original rainforest, complete with a network of trails for biodiversity exploration. The remaining 24 acres, formerly old pasture land, are now dedicated to implementing a regenerative permaculture design.

Adjacent to Corcovado National Park on its northern border, Cocoterra is situated in one of the most biodiverse regions in the world, second only to the rainforests of the Tropical Andes and upper Amazon. This region faces a pivotal moment as primary rainforest and abandoned pasture land encounter the pressures of local development. Los Planes de Osa, connected to the electrical grid only four years ago and recently made accessible by new bridges, is undergoing rapid change. Locals who cherish the area’s exquisite biodiversity are now confronting the challenges of new arrivals, increased land development, and high food costs, compounded by the tourism sector’s recent struggles, which heighten threats to wildlife from hunting.

At this critical juncture, traditional agricultural systems, which rely on extensive land use, have become unsustainable and are being abandoned. They must be replaced with regenerative practices. Community members, grappling with Costa Rica’s high cost of living, are eager to learn new regenerative agricultural methods. To educate people to become stewards of nature, they must be well-nourished. Permaculture models are essential tools for achieving food security and sustainability, while also preventing further rainforest depletion and biodiversity loss.

Cocoterra Rainforest Permaculture offers immersive, hands-on educational opportunities for community members, visitors, and volunteers. Here, you can learn about permaculture, regenerative design, rainforest and biodiversity conservation, sustainable food production, food security, ethnobotany, and herbalism. Our mission is to transform pasture land into a thriving source of food, medicinal plants, and wildlife habitat. Many varieties of heirloom cacao have been planted and fruit trees of many kinds are approaching fruition. This project unites people from diverse backgrounds with the common goal of regeneration, permaculture, and the protection of the rainforest and its biodiversity, co-creating harmony with Mother Earth, who sustains us all.
