This is the second in our series of posts featuring International Herb Symposium sponsors.
Thank you to Beth Lambert, CEO of Herbalist & Alchemist, for talking with us about their work!
UpS: Starting with the basics, what does Herbalist & Alchemist make? What is your mission?
H&A: Herbalist & Alchemist has been making quality herbal therapeutics for over 35 years. Our products are formulated by noted herbalist, author, and educator David Winston RH(AHG), and most of our production staff are trained herbalists.
Herbalist & Alchemist’s mission is to develop, manufacture, and distribute herbal supplements that are of the highest quality, manufactured from plant material that originates in harmony with the environment: organically grown, ethically wild-crafted, or sustainably harvested.
UpS: What are three surprising things about the company?
H&A: Next year is H&A’s 40th Anniversary of making great herbal products.
We were the first herbal manufacturing company to be a certified B Corporation.
We use spagyric alchemical practices; a process that adds ashed marc (spent herbal material) back to our products to return minerals.
UpS: And what are you excited about these days? What’s new?
H&A: We recently created a Green Team within our organization to further our already substantial sustainability initiatives. The team, made up of one member from each department, meets monthly to discuss the ways our company can meet and exceed our goals to be as low-waste, low-impact and environmentally conscious as possible.
UpS: What about plans for the future?
H&A: We have been strong supporters of Herbal Education to the Veterinary community. David Winston was one of the first speakers at the VBMA and has participated in their, and AHVMA‘s, conferences and webinar programs. After working with Veterinarians for many years, and in response to many requests, we are very excited to be developing a pet line.
Additionally, we are in the process of getting a number of our extracts Certified Organic.
UpS: Please tell us about your plant conservation practices:
H&A: We adhere to strict sustainability policies for sourcing herbs. We only purchase from ethical growers and wildcrafters to be sure their practices conserve plants. We also donate to our local Raritan Watershed Group, Musconetcong Watershed Association, and support UpS.
UpS: Do you have a favorite memory from the IHS?
H&A: From David: “What I remember is wonderful classes from International teachers that I had never met before and probably would never have met if it weren’t for this conference. Amazing classes by teachers that I knew well. A great sense of community and camaraderie with enthusiastic students that were hungry to learn all aspects of herbs. And a beautiful campus that provided a setting for some great herb walks.”
