Come spend a day at our Botanical Sanctuary and explore the beautiful foothills of the Appalachian mountains. With hiking trails, a heart shaped pond, and a large greenhouse; our sanctuary is the headquarters of the organization. Bring friends and family and spend the day exploring and enjoying the land!

How to visit the Sanctuary:

  • Office hours are Monday-Friday from 9am-4pm. Visitors are welcome to stop by and visit the Center, hike, and explore the facilities during this time.
  • Please complete this form if you are interested in scheduling a visit, guided hike, or renting the facilities.
  • If you wish to visit outside of office hours, the trails are open and you are welcome to come visit. We have a self-check-in kiosk located across from the Welcome Center. This kiosk has pertinent information for your visit including printed trail maps, a sign-in sheet, rules & recommendations, and educational resources about the organization. PLEASE either stop by the office or the kiosk when you arrive.
  • The office is closed for most major holidays. The facilities are under 24-hour video surveillance.

Duke Ethnobotanical Archives & Teaching Gardens

The Duke Library, located in the Center for Medicinal Plant Conservation, is the biggest collection of Jim Duke’s prolific herbal writings, and Peggy Duke’s incredible botanical drawings, along with the couple’s notes, files, and herbarium—preserving their extensive research for the public to see in one central locale.
