Arrival/Check-In: 8:30 a.m – 9:00 a.m.
Workshop: 9 a.m. – 12 pm.

Location: United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary, Rutland, OH 45775

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), also commonly known as “yellow root,” is one of southeast Ohio’s most iconic woodland medicinal plants, and has been harvested from Ohio’s forests for generations. Today, wild goldenseal populations are less abundant than they were in the past, and continue to face significant challenges associated with habitat loss, degradation, and overharvesting. Fortunately for aspiring growers, goldenseal is a resilient species that can be successfully cultivated in a variety of forest farming and agroforestry production systems.

This workshop will provide participants with a detailed look at goldenseal’s life cycle and habitat requirements; cultivation strategies for forest and agroforestry production systems; and hands-on propagation demonstrations where we will discuss how to subdivide mature rhizomes, and make cuttings from fibrous roots. Each participant will get two goldenseal rootlets to take home and plant! This workshop will be led by United Plant Savers Forest Program Manager, Tanner Filyaw.
