Join the United Plant Savers ginseng specialist, Chip Carroll, on Saturday, October 14th to learn how to sustainably cultivate, manage, and market ginseng roots using the wild-simulated method. American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), also commonly known as “sang,” has been harvested in southeast Ohio for generations, and the broader Appalachian region, since the mid-1700’s. A long history of overharvesting, coupled with a loss of suitable forest habitats, has resulted in significant declines among wild populations, and has contributed to increased concern about longevity and conservation of this legendary species. Despite having a reputation as being one of the more difficult herbs to cultivate, ginseng is an adaptable species that can be successfully grown in wild-simulated forest farming systems. This workshop will provide participants with a detailed look at ginseng’s history, life cycle, ecology, and habitat preferences; an overview of the wild-simulated method; as well as a wild-simulated planting demonstration. Stratified ginseng seed will be available for purchase.
