The Ohio Herbal Elders Project is a growing folklife & oral history project documenting & amplifying the diverse cultural traditions & places of traditional plant medicine practice across Ohio. Originally conceived by herbalist Lily Kunning (Haven Herbs), the project has been hosted by UpS & directed, since 2019, by cultural worker & documentary artist Jess Lamar Reece Holler of Caledonia Northern Folk Studios.

The Ohio Herbal Elders Project, 2.0, carried out from January thru June 2022, was funded by an Arts Resilience Initiative Community Projects Grant from the Ohio Arts Council & Arts Midwest, supported through the National Endowment for the Art’s American Rescue Plan. This funding allowed the project to launch a second iteration across 2022 – visiting with & documenting the herbal life stories of five additional plant medicine practitioners & contributors across Ohio. Our featured Ohio Herbal Elders include:

The Ohio Herbal Elders Project exhibit combines documentary photography, oral history interviews with each elder, & exhibit panels. The exhibit also features original photography from herbalist & acupuncturist Christian Totty. The exhibit will remain up through April 15, 2023. It will be accompanied by the launch of a companion digital exhibit, launching soon!
